Amino Acids

Amino acids are commonly described as the building blocks of protein, which is important as protein contributes to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass.

There are 21 amino acids in total, and these can be split into two categories: essential and non-essential amino acids.

Essential Amino Acids

Essential amino acids can’t be produced by your body and therefore must come from your
diet. Nine of the 21 amino acids are classed as essential, these are leucine, isoleucine, valine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and histidine.

You may recognise the first three on the list – valine, isoleucine, and valine – as they’re the three amino acids that are found in the super-popular branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs as they’re more widely known.

As the body is unable to store amino acids, a regular daily supply of these vital building blocks is needed.

Non-Essential Amino Acids

Non-essential amino acids on the other hand can be made by the body, so it’s not essential that we consume these in our diets.

The 12 non-essential amino acids consist of aspartic acid, alanine, arginine, asparagine, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, selenocysteine, serine, and tyrosine.

What are the benefits of amino acids?

Twenty percent of the human body is made up of protein. Protein plays a crucial role in almost all biological processes and amino acids are the building blocks of it. They make up the structure of new muscle tissue, and this is crucial for any fitness goal, whatever your aim.

Ensuring your body gets the correct amounts of both essential and non-essential amino acids will keep you healthy, making sure you're in the best possible condition to achieve your goals.

Dietary Sources of Amino Acids

All proteins are made of these building blocks we call amino acids, but not all dietary protein sources contain all the amino acids we need.

You may have heard certain types of protein being referred to as a complete protein, as they contain all essential amino acids in sufficient quantities. They’re typically animal-based protein sources such as meat, fish, dairy, and eggs – with only a limited number of plant-based sources considered complete like quinoa, buckwheat, hemp, and spirulina.
